Borat

I'm in the minority here. I didn't like this movie. It had it's funny parts, but overall a little tiresome. I also couldn't help thinking Borat is a Mahir ripoff. Remember Mahir from 1999?

Yes! He *is* a Mahor ripoff. that's one thing that always bothered me about him. That, and I am badly allergic to fake cyrillic.

BTW, we saw "Stranger than Fiction" today and liked it a lot.

The first season of Borat on Ali G was definitely a Mahor ripoff and the part of the show you knew wouldn't be funny - but in the second season when he introduced the whole incest, rape and retardation and fear of jews and gypsies angle it became really funny. If you thought it was tiresome I suspect you went to a McDonald's drive thru when you actually wanted a real meal!!

Chanchow, you are not alone in your sentiments.

I meant Mahir, not Mahor. Before that typo gets perpetuated any further...

I don't know Mahir (or Mahor?), but I agree that Borat was pretty boring. He's best in small doses.

One question: Would a Borat equivalent depicting a "comic" Muslim-hating Jew -- say an extremist settler from the West Bank -- be acceptable or ever screen in the U.S.?

I don't think so. I think that says a lot.

You're right about that OG.

That was the nice thing about Mahir, He only made fun of himself. BTW, a Romany organization in Europe is also getting ready to sue Cohen.

I was wondering if the movie was funny. I heard there were alot of "cringe-worthy" moments in it. Those I could do without.

TOTALLY!!

I never thought about that. I still want to rent the movie though. I can't pay to see it in the theater.
