The Area Code

What does your area code mean to you? I've been in LA for nearly a year and I still have my 917 cell phone number. Am I too lazy to change it (possibly) or do I want to hold on to my New York number (quite possibly)?

These days new area codes are popping up all the time. Am I the only one who may hold on to an old number just because?

Nope. Shout out to the 860! I'm in your area!

EJ still has her 917 number. Very irritating cause I can't call her for free from the office.

my husband says the exact same thing that mk posted. He changed cell numbers shortly after we moved out here to SF--I refuse to change my 917. Partly due to laziness, partly because I'm convinced that the day I change it is the day all of my friends who I haven't talked to in forever decide to call and see what's up.

I used to know all the area codes (because I had a job where twice a year I had to call all the wholesalers in all 50 states). But THOSE days are gone. Nowadays with cellphones, calling long distance isn't such a big deal so people can keep their numbers longer. But as MK posted, if you're restricted at work on long distance calls then you need to use your own cellphone!

It's all about nolstalgia for me. Keeping my cell phone number exactly as it was 4 years ago was totally intentional. Since I got my 973 Jersey number, I've moved from NJ to NY and now to IN. My 973 area code is my little bit of Jersey that I will always take with me.

I felt a small, palpable loss when I switched from 415 to 718. Even though I'd already been in NY for 2 years, I think the area code switch finalized any true possibility of moving back to San Francisco. It was a tiny little emblem of hope. (Not that I want to move back there anymore...)

keep in mind that the 917 is the "new" new york area code and not the original new york area code - just like 949 in the oc and 323 in l.a.
