In the Market for a New TV

For the last eight years, we've been watching my 27" Toshiba. A regular, perfectly good, twentieth century, 15" thick television set. Even my parents are telling us to get a new TV.

I keep hearing about HD, plasma, LCD. It all makes my head spin. I don't think we need the kind that hangs on the wall, but we want something bigger and not super thick (or super expensive). Any suggestions?

We realized a few weeks ago that all the TVs, VCRs and DVD players we have ever owned have been either gifts or (mostly) hand-me-downs. We will probably get our first LCD in 2012 when friends of ours upgrade to wall-sized Crystal Vision Omnicast.

we've been talking about jumping on the flatscreen wagon as soon as we buy a house. In the meantime, we just stare longingly at the large selection at the entrance of Costco (where we'll probably end up buying). It's probably a decent place to check out.

I'm sorry to say, but my TV sucks more than yours:

19" tube that's fading on the edges. When the Wii wouldn't hook up to it (something about new plugs..?) I had to run to the geeks at Radio Shack for help.

I would agree with the Costco suggestion. They're cheaper there and if it breaks (which the flats seem to do) Costco will replace it with a new one and not hassle you about it (like Best Buy or the others...)

Happy hunting! I hope you'll still talk to me after hangin' with the cool kids.

I would go to Best Buy for info, they are not on any commission and always are full of information. Then go to Costco to buy. It seems the Burbank store has a better inventory than the Los Feliz one.

Best Buy or Wal-Mart!

Sears is running a great deal on the Sony Bravia until Feb. 3 (at least up here in the Bay Area, but I'm sure if there's Sears down in LA, the sale follows). We just bought a 46 inch LCD for our new house (which we also just bought!). From the reviews and talking to folks, it seems like one of the better ones out there. Sears is selling it for 1999, which is significantly less than most retailers (best buy, circuit city, etc.) as the typical price is about 2300-2500. You can also get 24 months to pay with no interest if you sign up for a sears card. Sears--who knew? Good luck!
