Who's That Girl?

One of the most drastic decisions a girl can do with her hair is whether to get bangs. Sure, it's not the same as cutting your hair short or dyeing it some unnatural color, but it's a serious decision. One wrong snip and you have to wait years for those strands to catch up with the rest of your locks. This blogger got bangs last night, after almost a year of on and off deliberation.

My hairdresser understood the gravity of this move. Before she snipped away, she said, as if giving me one last chance to change my mind, "Oh, you're going to look different after this..." Unmoved, I took a deep breath and stood by my decision. Snipped she did. I think it looks fine, but it will take some getting used to.

As Virgil said, "Fortune favors the brave."

(And when did this site morph into Girlchat?)

This is not girlchat, Octopus. These are serious decisions made by serious people.

(hope i'm not stalking your blog and thank you for bringing such serious issues to the forefront)

...well, over this past summer on my honeymoon in the south of France i walked into a little random salon and had my med-long hair avec bangs cropped---near boy-short. no regrets. letting you know, i've been there...that deep breath before the snip. :)

Of course you are not stalking my blog. Love your comments (it's very encouraging to know that people, other than Octopus, are reading this)!

I'm impressed that you got bangs...in another country! That is really brave. Are you finding that bangs make you look younger?

CSP: I now realize that you said you got your hair cut really short, and not that you got bangs. My bad. My attention to detail is really suffering today. I'm so obsessed with bangs that I'm reading them when they're not really there. Having said that, it is even more bold of you to have gotten a boy-short cut in a foreign country!

Octopus can attest to the fact that I am deeply involved in any discussion of hair, whether it be styles, products, colors or the all important bang. Although he may have blocked this from his memory, Octopus himself was involved in my own Great Bang Debate of 1996, as he was one of a group of horrible boys who advised me to stop wearing bangs and just sweep all the hair off my forehead. This was an unfortunate and ill-advised decision, as I have sported bangs since birth in an effort to deflect attention from a forehead that can only be described as massive and borderline acromegalic. The drama continues, as it's not even a matter of bangs anymore, but rather "fringe" and "wisp" that only make up a part of my bang arrangement. Cheers to you, Chanchow, for bringing this vital and heretofore neglected subject to the forefront of popular discussion. Seriously, I could discuss this non-stop for days.

btw, I have no doubt that your bangs are adorable! Wear them in good health!

I fear that the above could be quite incriminating if quoted out of context.

I do vaguely remember the bang debate. Didn't I suggest curls?

Dear LC: Thanks for sharing your pain. Good to know that there is a common current here (just as I'd suspected!) Before getting bangs earlier this week, my previous two or three hair cuts included "long bangs," which I suppose were a baby step towards the real bangs that I have now.

I think the bang issue is particularly acute for Asian women because most have pin straight hair, which means that they often consider getting layers, long bangs, perms and/or traditional bangs in order to have some body and volume.

i recently got a short bob after having long hair for 10 years. i almost got the bangs too...but i chickened out. actually, there was no deep breath moment for me...I freaked out as the stylist kept going shorter and shorter and i made her stop.
you should post a picture of your new 'do!
